Baptism is an ordinance or sacrament of the church commanded by the Lord Jesus Christ. Baptism is the act of immersing a person who has trusted in Jesus into water as an initiation into the Christian life. Baptism represents the person’s death to sin and their new life in Christ. Because baptism initiates a person into the Christian life and the life of the church, it is followed by joining the church through membership.
